Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is becoming very popular in India. With Indian fighters competing internationally and many people looking for new ways to stay fit, MMA is attracting a lot of attention. If you are planning to try your first MMA class but are not sure what happens inside the gym, this guide will give you a clear picture.
What is MMA?
MMA is a combat sport that mixes different martial arts. It combines:
Striking – punches and kicks from boxing and kickboxing.
Grappling – takedowns and ground fighting from wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).
This mix makes MMA a complete sport for fitness, self-defense, and competition.
What Happens in a Beginner MMA Class
Warm-up (Mobility & Conditioning)
The class starts with light exercises to loosen your body. This may include jogging, skipping, stretching, push-ups, or squats. It prepares you for training and prevents injuries.
Basic Striking Drills
You will learn simple punches, kicks, and how to stand properly. Coaches show you the correct way to throw a jab, cross, hook, and basic kicks. Don’t worry if you are new everything is taught step by step.
Basic Grappling Drills
Next, you’ll try easy grappling moves. This could be learning how to control an opponent, basic takedowns, or simple ground movements like shrimping or bridging.
Partner Drills & Light Practice
You may work with a partner to practice punches on pads or basic grappling positions. Sometimes, there may be light sparring, but it’s always controlled and safe.
Cool Down
At the end, you’ll stretch and do breathing exercises to relax your muscles.
What to Bring to Your First MMA Class
Comfortable workout clothes
Water bottle
Small towel
Hand wraps and gloves (if you have them)
